I have been teaching for over three decades and have spent much of that time trying to figure out how to do it better.
For 13 years I chaired and developed a department at one of the most prestigious high schools in the country (link to Servite). In my quest to get the best information for myself and my teachers found answers in cognitive and behavioral neuroscience and psychology.
I began applying these principals, just a few at first, in the classroom and was able to get significant results. Over years I refined these techniques. Getting rid of some, revisiting others and spending my time figuring out how to best get students to genuinely learn the curriculum.
Along the way I found the elements necessary for doing this which included the path to develop a love for genuine learning, and not just passing tests. I also found that tests became easy to pass when genuine higher learning was occurring.
To my surprise I found that these principals applied to all learning. I began to hold meetings with my colleagues and coached teachers in the arts, sciences, maths, languages, history as well as our sports coaches.
I was encouraged by colleagues to share these things, which are available to all through many sources of research, with a greater community and so began my clinician/consultancy career.
I love sharing this with others and helping develop educational interventions. I love creating lightbulb moments in teachers and students.
” Thank you SO much for all your time, and precious help! . .Wow, hard to tell in words what you shared with us… Thank you for your generosity and passion about learning how to learn! “
